Job Summary:
The Assistant Controller is accountable for all general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions and en-sures that appropriate internal controls are adequate to safeguard and control the company’s resources and records.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for supervising the activities/functions of the Accounting Department which include the maintenance and control over computer records and systems involving the general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and inventory.
- Assigns, schedules and coordinates the activities of accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll and provides guidance, training and instruction.
- Prepares required journal entries and reconciliations monthly.
- Preparation and submission of annual financials to corporate entity.
- Maintains internal control procedures adequate to safeguard and control the company’s resources and records; ensures the confidentiality of financial and non-financial information contained in the company’s accounts and files.
- Analyzes and interprets operational and financial information routinely and as requested.
- Variance analysis (purchase price variance, labour variance, spending variances).
- Manage the annual budget preparation working with all departments to finalize the fiscal budget.
- Manage the quarterly forecast process.
- Monitors and manages cash flow, including foreign exchange requirements.
- Prepare and distribute weekly, monthly and ad hoc sales reporting.
- Insurance broker liaison and preparation of annual renewal information.
- Coordinate and act as main liaison for annual external audit, ensure all required documentation is prepared and submitted in a timely manner.
- Manage fixed asset purchases and related financing, ROI calculations, amortization, reporting.
- Support other departments with ERP training, process improvement, special projects.
- Company Benefit analysis and liaison with broker.
- Online banking contact and administrator.
- Corporate Credit Card account administrator.
- Corporate owned/leased auto fleet administrator.
- All other duties assigned.
Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
- University Degree in Commerce or Business Administration or equivalent.
- Minimum Experience: 5 years in a related field.
- Preferred: CPA Designation.
- Must have a thorough understanding of bookkeeping, accounting, costing and control procedures.
- Must have good reading, writing, computational, analytical and problem-solving skills in or order to discharge responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
- Must be computer literate and have good working knowledge of accounting application software as well as operational skills involving computers, MS Excel, ERP Systems (NetSuite), consolidated reporting software (HFM), etc.
- Must have good communication, interpersonal and management skills to be able to direct, manage, motivate and otherwise work effectively with others (i.e. Departmental managers); must be able to resolve operational and people problems in a courteous and discrete manner; must be tactful and use good judgement in dealing with people.
- Good interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively and clearly with customers, suppliers and other external person in resolving problems, providing information and responding queries; must be friendly, polite and courteous; must possess tact and use judgement in dealing with difficult and demanding customers and suppliers.
- Good organizational skills to plan and coordinate departmental activities to ensure that work is completed accurately and within deadlines.
- Must be knowledgeable in all facets of the company’s operations.
